Resumo: Introduction: Suicide is considered an important public health problem, with significant prevalence and incidence rate worldwide. Among the means used for suicide attempt is the exogenous ingestion of medicines. Objectives: To evaluate the profile of medicine poisoning as a suicidal motivation in Brazil over the past 10 years. Methods: A descriptive, time-series study was performed in 2 national databases: DATASUS - SINAN (Information System of Notifiable Diseases) and Sinitox (National System of Toxic-Pharmacological Information). Data on exogenous poisoning between 2010 and 2021 ware analyzed, evaluating the variables circumstance, gender, age group, skin color, education level, region of residence, evolution, and deaths. Results: According to SINAN, 572,951 cases of exogenous intoxication by medicines were reported over the past 10 years in Brazil, being suicide attempt the main circumstance (64%) related to the use. The profile of intoxication was composed mainly of women (77%) aged 20-39 years (48.4%). In addition, these events were more prevalent among white individuals (49.3%), residents of the Southeast region of the country (51.3%). Intoxications evolved mainly to cure without sequelae (82%), with less frequent deaths (<1%). The SINAN database provided a larger dataset than the Sinitox one. Conclusion: Exogenous intoxication by medicine poisoning as a suicidal motivation was more frequent among young adult white women coming from the Southeast region. Knowing that suicide can be prevented, multidisciplinary strategies should be designed based on effective public mental health policies aimed at this public. These results should be analyzed carefully, since there are gaps in both of the databases evaluated (SINAN and Sinitox).
