Resumo: This dissertation aims to present the importance of Continued Fractions and to explore the historical context of their development. For this, a discussion about the Euclid algorithm is initiated, the studies of several mathematicians are revisited, in order to arrive at the composition of the fractions as we know them and use them today. Basic concepts of numerical sequences will also be addressed, as they are of essential importance for the understanding of continued fractions. Then, a study will be done about the Continued Fractions theory and their main results. Finally, in a more practical approach, it will be demonstrated an application of the continued fractions theory in the construction of a calendar.

Para tanto, inicia-se uma discussão sobre o algoritmo de Euclides, revisitam-se os estudos de vários matemáticos, para enfim chegarmos `a composição das frações como a conhecemos e utilizamos hoje. Conceitos básicos de seqüências numéricas serão igualmente abordados, pois são de essencial importância para a compreensão das frações contínuas. Em seguida, ser´a feito um estudo acerca da teoria das Frações Contínuas e seus principais resultados.
