Beyond the two-dimensional of the paper: The art of the blind embossing to the handmade paper in contemporary printmaking

Resumo: If we want to understand how the volumetric and creative possibilities of paper have been explored, it is important to study one of the artistic disciplines such as printmaking, since it was from this point of view that the artistic community began to break with the two- dimensionality of paper. Under this position, the present text aims to venture into the exercise of tracing how, through printmaking, artists experimented with paper, first using it as a medium for reproducing images, to gradually become a source of experimentation and finally, the piece of art per se. In this sense, we will start from the X century with blind embossing, to talk about the handling of paper pulp in contemporary printmaking.

Bajo esta tesitura, el presente texto tiene como objetivo aventurarse en el ejercicio de rastrear cómo, a través del grabado, los artistas experimentaron con el papel, utilizándolo primero como soporte de reproducción de imágenes, para, gradualmente, pasar a ser una fuente de experimentación y, finalmente, la pieza de arte en sí. En este sentido, partiremos del siglo X, con el gofrado en seco, para hablar del manejo de la pulpa de papel en el grabado contemporáneo.Se quisermos entender como vêm sendo exploradas as possibilidades volumétricas e criativas do papel, é importante estudar disciplinas artísticas como a gravura, pois foi a partir dela que a comunidade artística começou a romper com a bidimensionalidade do papel. Partindo dessa premissa, este texto pretende aventurar-se no exercício de rastrear a forma pela qual, através da gravura, os artistas experimentaram com o papel, utilizando-o primeiro como suporte para a reprodução de imagens para, gradualmente, tornar-se uma fonte de experimentação e, por fim, a própria obra de arte.
