Fatah and Hamas posture in relation to graffiti in Occupied Palestinian Territories: a political-visual dispute

Resumo: The graffiti has been used by various political groups in Gaza and the West Bank as a way of marking their influence and activities in various districts and to spread their ideologies among the population. From this, the objective is to understand the way in which this political dispute also operates in the visual field through the expressions of street art. For that, different records of these communications were raised, analyzed and described taking into account the political power of these expressions. In this way, it was possible to observe different intensities of control by Fatah and Hamas in relation to graphite, despite the similarity in the logic of the configuration of the communications itself. The central argument is that the political-social dispute observed between such factions also has an important visual facet, evidenced by the systematic use of graffiti.

A partir disso, o presente trabalho objetiva compreender a forma pela qual a disputa entre o Fatah e o Hamas também opera no campo visual através das expressões de arte de rua. Para isso, foram levantados diferentes registros dessas comunicações, analisados e descritos tomando em perspectiva a potência política dessas expressões. Dessa forma, foi possível observar diferentes intensidades de controle por parte do Fatah e do Hamas em relação ao grafite, apesar da semelhança na lógica de configuração das comunicações em si. O argumento central é que a disputa político-social observada entre tais facções também tem uma importante faceta visual, evidenciada pelo uso sistemático do grafite.
