Resumo: This text addresses the monument to Marechal Floriano Peixoto, inaugurated on Rio de Janeiro in 1910, designed by Eduardo Sá, following the principles of positivst art, thanks to a contest promoted by the Comissão Glorificadora do Marechal Floriano Peixoto. The research starts from the discussion on the formation and the dispute for the republican imaginary of Brazil and attempts to contribute with new ways to address the monument, privileging an analysis that thinks the monument as in fact a work of art through Rosalind Krauss' idea of the narrative art of the relief. Building on José Reginaldo Santos Gonçalves' and Reinhart Koselleck's work there is an attempt to highlight the different readings the monument arouse and how it fails to create a republican imaginary for Brazil, evoking José Murilo de Carvalho's work.
