Multiplicity and complexity of travel purposes: evidences from tourism demand of a large city

Resumo: This article focuses on travel purposes by discussing and clarifying the nature of this variable fromconceptual and empirical perspectives. Traditional ways of gathering and presenting information abouttravel purposes are inadequate as they simplify reality, disregarding relevant aspects for acomprehensive inquiry on the subject. A first omission concerns multiple purposes of a single tripsince most surveys currently record only the main travel purpose. Another issue is the heterogeneityencompassed by the broad categories generally used to describe travel purpose. This article presentsand discusses the results of four surveys that interviewed a total of 4,216 tourists who visited SãoPaulo city. The multiple and heterogeneous aspects of travel purposes are examined in detail fromtourists' perspectives. Some recommendations to better specify usual travel purpose concepts arepresented. The paper also suggests that tourism demand questionnaires should be more detailed tocapture travel purposes appropriately. The multiplicity and complexity of travel purposes should notbe underestimated. Recognizing multiple purposes and the heterogeneity encompassed by traditionaltravel purpose categories are important steps for better understanding, explaining, and predictingtourism demand and consumption.

Una primera omisión serefiere a múltiples motivos para un mismo viaje ya que la mayoría de las encuestas actualmenteregistran solo el motivo principal. Otro tema es la heterogeneidad de las categorías generalmenteutilizadas para describir los motivos del viaje. Este artículo presenta y analiza los resultados de cuatroencuestas que entrevistaron a un total de 4216 turistas que visitaron la ciudad de São Paulo. Lamultiplicidad y la heterogeneidad de los motivos de viaje son examinadas en detalle a partir de laperspectiva de los turistas. Son presentadas recomendaciones para mejor especificar los conceptosusuales de motivos de viaje. Este trabajo también sugiere que los cuestionarios de encuestas dedemanda turística sean más detallados para captar los motivos de viaje de forma adecuada. No se debesubestimar la multiplicidad y complejidad de los motivos de viaje. Reconocer los múltiples motivos yla heterogeneidad abarcada por las categorías de motivos usuales son pasos importantes para unamejor comprensión, explicación y predicción de la demanda y lo consumo turístico.Este artigo examina os motivos de viagem, buscando discutir e esclarecer a natureza dessa variável.
