Resumo: This study examines Candomblé in Salvador during the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, specifically between 1890 and 1910. The sources utilized include periodicals from the time, official state documents (legislation), and population census data. The research addresses various themes, such as the centrality of Candomblé and the underlying relationships surrounding its practice, including negritude, police repression, the moral values of the dominant class, racism, and others. The sources were collected from physical archives, such as the Library of the Geographical and Historical Institute of Bahia and the Central Library of the State of Bahia, as well as periodicals available in the Brazilian Digital Newspaper Library. The study highlights the resistance of Afro-descendant religious communities against repression while keeping the cultural and spiritual traditions of Candomblé alive. It contributes to the understanding of Afro-Brazilian history and culture, recognizing Candomblé as a vital expression of negritude and a source of resistance, aiming to foster the inclusion of studies that encompass negritude within the realm of leisure.

Se utilizaron como fuentes los periódicos disponibles en ese período, documentos oficiales del estado (legislación) y el censo poblacional. Durante la investigación, se abordan temas centrales del Candomblé y las relaciones subyacentes a su práctica, como las negritudes, la represión policial, los valores morales de la clase dominante y el racismo, entre otros.Este estudo analisa o Candomblé em Salvador, na virada do século XIX para o XX, entre os anos de 1890 e 1910, utilizamos como fontes, os periódicos disponíveis do período, documentos oficiais do estado (legislação) e o censo populacional. Durante o trabalho abordaremos como tema central o Candomblé e as relações subjacentes à prática como as negritudes, a repressão policial, os valores morais da classe dominante e o racismo entre outros. As fontes foram coletadas em arquivos físicos, como a Biblioteca do Instituto Geográfico e Histórico da Bahia e a Biblioteca Central do Estado da Bahia, além de periódicos disponíveis na Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira. O estudo destaca a resistência das comunidades religiosas afrodescendentes frente à repressão, mantendo viva a tradição cultural e espiritual do Candomblé.
