Resumo: Scholars point out that studies on the growth of a ‘new’ middle class in Brazil must consider the vulnerabilities to which people are subjected. This article presents a theoretical approach to the food consumption of this social group from the perspective of sustainability, rooted in the country's institutional political context and illustrated with the discourse of representatives of sectors of the food system, interviewed by the authors in 2019. It was observed that the kind of foods considered sustainable were associated with "real food", the access to them is constrained by personal income and access to information, and even with the support of public policies, the unequal coexistence of agribusiness over family agriculture is perpetuated, leading the poorest population to the consumption of unhealthy food. The research findings offer an in the deep debate on sustainability and the unequal coexistence of different production systems.
