This study examines personality traits as antecedents of student persistence behavior in higher education courses in the distance learning. It adopts the Metatheoretical Model of Motivation and Personality (3M) as a theoretical foundation. Self-administered questionnaires were sent to a sample of 490 students of Licenciate courses in distance learning. Structural Equation Modeling was used to analyze the relationships between the constructs. The personality traits that most explain Student Persistence are Satisfaction with the Course, Agreeability, Self-efficacy and Need for Learning. The originality of the study is in using the 3M Model to understand student persistence behavior. The results contribute to the design of policies that promote the reduction of student dropouts and improve higher education indicators, especially in distance learning courses.
