Resumo: This article aims to analyze the training situation of librarians and information professionals in Africa from its origins until today, based on a bibliographic survey of the existing and available literature on the subject, with emphasis on the reality of Guinea-Bissau. The work analyzes the career of professionals in libraries and Information/Documentation services in Guinea-Bissau, reflecting on their identities, profiles, skills, social visibility, expectations, dilemmas and the way in which they develop survival strategies in the face of new challenges of information and communication technology. The dynamics of the librarianship and information sciences system are addressed in the face of the challenges that are imposed on the knowledge society, in constant evolution. Some points for reflection on the obvious need for improvement of the library and archival community in Guinea-Bissau are presented.

O trabalho analisa a carreira dos profissionais de bibliotecas e serviços de Informação/Documentação na Guiné-Bissau, refletindo-se sobre as suas identidades, perfis, competências, visibilidade social, expectativas, dilemas e a forma como vão desenvolvendo estratégias de sobrevivência face a novos desafios da tecnologia de informação e comunicação. Abordam-se as dinâmicas do sistema de biblioteconomia e ciências de informação frente aos desafios que se impõem à sociedade do conhecimento, em constante evolução.
