Nursing technician: aspects on labour and profession

Resumo: The professional category of Nursing Technicians is the largest workforce in the health area, as well as the high school level/degree technical course with the highest number of enrollments in Rio de Janeiro state. The objective of the present paper was to investigate aspects related to the work and career of Nursing Technicians. The theoretical framework considered was in dialogue with references from Labour Sociology, in order to characterize the current world of work, just as in research from Nursing and Public Health which helped to characterize the historical reconstitution of work, profession and vocational formation in Nursing. Concerning to answer the objectives of this paper, an empirical research was carried out from 16 semi-structured interviews with teachers from vocational schools and representatives of Nursing, in which themes such as the current conjuncture that permeates the labour market, the working conditions and conflicts in the professional exercise, the prestige and social recognition and the remarkable feminization of the female workers in the area were approached. It was concluded that the professional exercise still presents traces of continuity of its own profession’s formation and that the conditions of work are in conformity with the tendency of structural precarization that mark the new morphology of the world of the work.

O objetivo do presente texto foi o de investigar aspectos referentes ao trabalho e a profissão dos Técnicos em Enfermagem. O quadro teórico considerado se deu em diálogo com referências da Sociologia do Trabalho, a fim de caracterizar o atual mundo do trabalho, bem como em pesquisas da Enfermagem e Saúde Pública que ajudaram a caracterizar a reconstituição histórica do trabalho, profissão e formação técnica em Enfermagem. Para responder aos objetivos do texto, foi realizada uma pesquisa empírica a partir de 16 entrevistas semiestruturadas com professores de escolas técnicas e representantes da Enfermagem, em que foram abordados temas como a atual conjuntura que perpassa o mercado de trabalho, as condições de trabalho e conflitos no exercício profissional, o prestígio e reconhecimento social e a marcante feminização das trabalhadoras da área.
