Resumo: This study aimed at observing and experiencing the routine of workers and young people who study at the Agricultural Family School Nova Esperança to understand its importance in their lives and in the region. It is a qualitative research, utilising the participant observation method, as well as document analysis and informal conversations with research subjects. In this sense, we will report a brief history about the beginning of Agricultural Family Schools (EFAs) in Brazil, in Minas Gerais and in the Alto Rio Pardo region. Next, we will address the pedagogy of alternation, methodology utilised by the EFAs, it is a way of providing access to quality education to young people living in rural areas, valuing cultural, social, community and political aspects. Finally, we will report on the firsthand experience at the AFS Nova Esperança, located at the Taiobeiras Township, micro-region of the Alto Rio Pardo in Minas Gerais. We will highlight the support from the Agricultural Family School to the development of knowledge and skills of its students, enabling the students to leave school qualified to join the job market, and conscious of the importance of residing in their regions, becoming reference and support for the growth and strengthening the region’s family agriculture.

É uma pesquisa de cunho qualitativo, utilizando para isto o método da observação participante, bem como análise documental e conversas informais com os sujeitos da pesquisa. Assim, iremos relatar um breve histórico do surgimento das EFAs no Brasil, em Minas Gerais e na região do Alto Rio Pardo. Em sequência, abordar sobre a pedagogia da alternância, metodologia utilizada pelas EFAs, que é uma forma de proporcionar aos jovens que vivem na zona rural uma educação de qualidade, valorizando os aspectos culturais, sociais, comunitários e políticos.
