Child labor: a brief analysis of the standards of protection of children and adolescents in the world of work

This paper is a literature review on minors’ labor, which aims to present the variations in the way the legislation has been approaching the theme “child labor” in Brazil and, for that purpose, initially, the concept of labor based on the Marxian theory was explored by highlighting how the theme child labor was discussed by Marx and Engels. Subsequently, taking Post-Industrial-Revolution England as the main focus, we identified the first initiatives in order to protect the working minors and against the exploitation of child labor in factories. Finally, there was an analysis of the child labor in Brazil, presenting the historic context in which the system for the protection of child and adolescent labor was derived, combined with a study about the main rights guaranteed in law. The conclusion is that the legal apparatus which discusses about the protection of children and adolescents is vast, which addresses the exploitation of their workforce. Nevertheless, this also evidenced the crucial role which must be played by both the family and the state for the defense of these rights in the combat of the immoderate abuse of infant workforce.
