Resumo: The pandemic unleashed by COVID-19 has drastically affected the entire world economy. Situations of extreme tension like this lead society to reflect on its own weaknesses. In this context, the present work discusses the precariousness of the teaching work of professionals in the city of Petrópolis, under the perspective of mathematics teachers from this municipal network. Deep social changes arising from the presence of new technologies on the global stage favor the adoption, by public and private bodies, of measures aimed at replacing employment with alternative forms of contracting. This research is located in the scenario of the pandemic caused by COVID-19, in which the temporary contracts of teachers of the municipal network of Petrópolis were suspended and, given the complexity of the world situation, the lack of perspective given to these professionals amplifies the personal crisis of each one. Based on a literature review on the recent precarious practices of teaching work in national basic education, a case study was conducted, which sought to analyze quantitative data regarding the way of hiring teachers from the municipal network of Petrópolis from 2016 to 2019 It is concluded that, despite the increase of professionals with graduate education in the studied period, this fact also did not contribute to the improvement of their working conditions, reflected in the substantial increase of teachers hired on a temporary basis in the period. This change in the teacher's profile also did not indicate an improvement in the learning process in mathematics by the students. The results corroborate with a worldwide symptom: the precariousness of labor relations present, particularly in the country's education field.
