Resumo: By developing a reflection on teaching in higher education in Brazil, through the analysis of existing analogies between educational policies and World Bank guidelines, based on the guidelines developed by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) for this education level, it is herein intended to confront opinions on the professionalization of university professors, by identifying the characteristics attributed to those professionals and discussing the ways available for their qualification. Besides binding qualification to career progression based on the performance evaluation prepared by CAPES, the valuation of professors currently stimulates competition, which pushes qualification to be short term and exclusively market oriented. That situation has de-characterized the profession and labeled it in excessive efficiency, disregarding the requisites for their good performance.

That situation has de-characterized the profession and labeled it in excessive efficiency, disregarding the requisites for their good performance.Ao se desenvolver uma reflexão sobre a docência no ensino superior no Brasil, por meio da análise dos analogismos existentes entre as políticas educacionais e as diretrizes do Banco Mundial, a partir das diretrizes elaboradas pela Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal do Ensino Superior (CAPES) para esse nível de ensino, pretende-se confrontar o entendimento sobre profissionalização do professor universitário, identificando-se as características atribuídas a esse profissional e discutindo-se as formas disponíveis para essa qualificação. Além de atrelá-la à progressão funcional baseada na avaliação de desempenho elaborada pela CAPES, a valorização desses profissionais incita atualmente uma competitividade que pressiona a qualificação dos professores em curto prazo e exclusivamente mercadológica.
