Science without borders: student’s experiences in Dentistry

Resumo: This study aimed to identify contributions from Science without Borders experience to undergraduates from Dental School of the Federal University of Minas Gerais. Students who had returned until in February 2015 were interviewed. Data was interpreted using content analysis and divided into thematic cores: personal, professional and academic scope contributions, and evaluations and suggestions to the program enhancement. The results showed that studying abroad enabled independence, communication and critical thinking development. The interviewed students highlighted graduation extension experience and new knowledge achievement. Professionally, the students perceived differences on patient’s profile and on foreign dentists’ procedures. The interviewed assessed the program as positive. However, it presented some communication deficiencies between students and responsible entities. The undergraduates demanded better assistance and recognition of knowledge brought by them when returning to Brazil.

The undergraduates demanded better assistance and recognition of knowledge brought by them when returning to Brazil.Este estudo teve como objetivo identificar contribuições oriundas da experiência dos estudantes de graduação da Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais no programa Ciência sem Fronteiras. Foram entrevistados os alunos que retornaram do intercâmbio até fevereiro de 2015. Os dados foram interpretados por meio da análise de conteúdo e divididos em núcleos temáticos: contribuições para o campo pessoal, profissional e acadêmico, além de avaliações e sugestões para o aprimoramento do programa. Os resultados apontaram que o intercâmbio propiciou desenvolvimento de independência, comunicação e pensamento crítico. Os entrevistados destacaram a ampliação da experiência na graduação e a obtenção de novos conhecimentos. Eles perceberam diferenças no perfil dos pacientes e na atuação dos cirurgiões-dentistas do exterior.
