A teaching methodology for undergraduate laboratory classes

This paper proposes some changes in the methodology traditionally adopted in both experimental Physics and Engineering disciplines. Based on the authors’ experience at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) and Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV), the methodology proposed intends to provide a more investigative character to practical classes, which principal aim can be considered the search for an education for competence. In order to provide a basis for the beginning student in laboratory courses, the need to create an introductory discipline has been discussed. This discipline has been offered by UFMG since the first semester of 2011. Since the second semester of the same year, the discipline has also been offered by UFV through video conference system. A pilot project for the virtualization of this course is under development in order to make it available through Internet to other educational institutions.
