Leprosy effects on patients' daily lives: vulnerability and solidarity

Resumo: With the purpose of supporting the nursing care provided to leprosy patients at a teaching health care unit, this study aimed at analysing the effects of leprosy on the patients’ daily lives. The Discourse of Collective Subjects was the methodological framework used. Discourses were analysed using bioethical theories. Seventeen leprosy patients cared for at the unit were recruited for the study. The effects of the disease, as reported by the respondents, indicated the patients’ high vulnerability that coexists with a weak solidarity. The study fulfilled its purpose of providing nursing care with a theoretical support that will enable the identification of aspects that make leprosy patients vulnerable. It will allow as well the patients empowerment through nursing interventions for facing and overcoming fragility.

El enfoque metodológico fue el Discurso del Sujeto Colectivo. Para el análisis de los discursos fueron utilizados marcos teóricos de la Bioética. El presente estudio incluyó 17 pacientes con diagnóstico de lepra, con seguimiento del servicio. Las repercusiones de la enfermedad reportadas por los entrevistados indicaron una alta vulnerabilidad de estos pacientes que, al mismo tiempo, conviven con una solidaridad frágil. El estudio cumplió con su propósito de ofrecer subsidios para la atención de enfermería que posibilite la identificación de los aspectos que hacen que los enfermos de lepra sean vulnerables, buscando cómo enfrentar y superar las fragilidades con miras a su empoderamiento.Com a finalidade de subsidiar a assistência de enfermagem prestada ao hanseniano em um Centro de Saúde-Escola, com este estudo objetivou-se analisar as repercussões da hanseníase no cotidiano desses pacientes. O referencial metodológico foi o Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo. Para a análise dos discursos foram utilizados referenciais teóricos da Bioética. Fizeram parte da pesquisa 17 pacientes com diagnóstico de hanseníase, acompanhados pelo serviço. As repercussões da doença relatadas pelos entrevistados indicaram alta vulnerabilidade desses pacientes, que convivem, ao mesmo tempo, com uma frágil solidariedade.
