Resumo: A theoretical reference constitutes the universe of principles, categories and concepts, forming a coherent unit, in which the research is based and developed. The family systems theory as a theoretical reference for nursing research enables the growth of the knowledge in the science of family nursing. The purpose of this article is to weave some considerations and reflections regarding the use and contributions of the family systems theory as a Reference in researching families in illness and death situations. We present the main orienting concepts as well as its applicability in research in family nursing. within the perspective of family systems nursing theory, the patient becomes the family system, that is, the family becomes the unit of care and research.

La teoría de sistemas familiares como referencia teórica de investigaciones en enfermería, hace posible la ampliación del cuerpo de conocimiento del área de enfermería de la familia. Este artículo tiene por objetivo tejer algunas consideraciones y reflexiones sobre la utilización y contribuciones de la teoría de sistemas familiares, como referencia para trabajos de investigación con la familia, en especial en situaciones de enfermedad y muerte. Presentamos los principales conceptos y presupuestos orientadores, así como su aplicabilidad en trabajos de investigación en el área de enfermería de la familia. Partiendo de la perspectiva de la enfermería de sistemas familiares, el cliente pasa a ser el sistema familiar, o sea, la familia se convierte en la unidad del cuidado y de la investigación.Um referencial teórico constitui o universo de princípios, categorias e conceitos, formando um conjunto coerente, no qual a pesquisa se fundamenta e se desenvolve. A teoria de sistemas familiares como referencial teórico de pesquisas em enfermagem possibilita a ampliação do corpo de conhecimento da área de enfermagem da família. Neste artigo, tecem-se algumas considerações e reflexões sobre a utilização e as contribuições da teoria de sistemas familiares como referencial para pesquisas com família especialmente em situações de doença e morte. São apresentados os principais conceitos e pressupostos orientadores, bem como a aplicabilidade deles em pesquisas na área da enfermagem da família.
