Resumo: This is a descriptive and exploratory study with the objective of identifying the kind of violence that sex workers suffer at work, describe their social and economic profile and attitudes of the women after the violence. The data was collected from January to June 2003, involving 40 female sex workers from the town of Sobral, State of Ceará, Brazil. Twenty-five percent (10) are aged between 14 and 19 old; 25% (10) have fixed boyfriends; 82.5% (33) know how to read and write; 42.5% (17) earn between 1 and 3 minimum salaries; 12.5% (5) were domestic workers; 30% (12) have suffered physical violence; 12.5% (5) sexual violence; 10% (4) psychological violence and 47.5% (19) said they had not suffered any type of violence. Of the 21 who suffered violence, 33% (7) said that when they were raped, they reacted with physical violence; 19% (4) ran away and 48% (10) did not react.

Los datos se recogieron entre enero y junio de 2003 con cuarenta profesionales del sexo femenino de la sede del municipio de Sobral-Ceará-Brasil. Los resultados revelaron que el 25% (10) tenía entre 14 y 19 años; 25% (10) tenía compañeros fijos; el 82,5% (33) estaba alfabetizada; el 42,5% (17) ganaba entre 1 y 3 sueldos mínimos; el 12,5% (5 ) era empleada doméstica ; 30% (12) padeció violencia física, el 12,5% (5) violencia sexual, 10% (4) violencia psicológica y el 47,5% (19) no había padecido ningún tipo de violencia; el 33% (7) al ser violada respondía con violencia física, el 19% (4) se escapaba y 48% (10) no tomaba ninguna actitud.Trata-se de estudo descritivo e exploratório tendo como objetivos identificar os tipos de violência que as profissionais do sexo sofrem durante seu trabalho, caracterizar o perfil socioeconômico e identificar as atitudes tomadas pelas mulheres após a vitimização. Os dados foram coletados no período de janeiro a junho de 2003 e contou com a participação de 40 profissionais do sexo feminino da sede do município de Sobral - Estado do Ceará, Brasil.
