Resumo: This study aimed to compare prenatal care delivered in urban and rural Brazil. A cross-sectional population-based survey was conducted based on Children and Women's Health and Demography National Survey - PNDS 2006 data and refer to a sample of 588 women. The software Stata, version 9.0, was used on data analysis. The qui-square test was used to verify prevalence differences between pregnant woman living in Brazil's rural and urban areas regarding a) socioeconomic and demographic situation and; b) accomplishment of the procedures of prenatal care, according to Prenatal and Birth Humanization Program - PHPN. It was considered the level of significance of 5%. Results revealed differences in relation to women schooling (p=0,0071) and gross household income (p=0,0001), possession of health plan (p=0,0023), the accomplishment of tests for sifilis (p=0,0293) and hepatitis B (p=0,0424), and offer for HIV (p=0,0132) and toxoplasmosis (p=0,0452) tests, pointing out the best results for pregnant women living in urban areas. In addition, unsatisfactory access to procedures for nutritional deficiencies prevention, the tetanus vaccination and the number of visits recommended for both local - urban and rural areas, were identified. This study pointed out that the quality of prenatal care offered in both households situations is deficitary. However, the prenatal care delivered in rural areas is even less adequate.
