Resumo: The study was delineated in a qualitative way. The aim was to find out the family representation on caring of people with mental disorder in quotidian life.The four (4) Psychosocial Attention Centers, located in São Paulo City/Brazil, were the scenery and focused on the research. The chosen subjects were twenty-two (22) care takers who participated on therapeutic groups of developed families, systematically, in these institutions and those who lived with the patient in the same household. The approach of the subjects respected in the ethic principles of participation in the researches by means of signing the free-will consent term, explained and approved by the Ethic and Research Committee of the Municipal Office of Health of São Paulo City. The data were collected on the period from June to August 2007 through semi-structured interviews and subjected on analyses of discourse with the prop on the materialism historic-dialectic referential, making possible the emergence following theme: Caring of people with mental disorder in quotidian life: families's representations.To the families, looking of people with mental disorder on daily demands on time and dedication and facing the lack of a social support net, it represents emotional overload and financial additional, resulting in divesting and resignation of life projects.

Los escenarios de investigación fueron cuatro centros de atención psicosocial de la ciudad de San Pablo/Brasil. Los sujetos elegidos fueron veintidós cuidadores que vivían en el mismo domicilio del usuario y que participaban de los grupos terapéuticos de familia reunidos sistemáticamente en estas instituciones. Al tratar a los sujetos se respetaron los principios éticos de participación en investigación mediante la firma del término de consentimiento informado aprobado por el Comité de Ética en Investigación de la Secretaria Municipal de Salud de San Pablo/Brasil. La recogida de datos se efectuó entre junio y agosto de 2007 e incluyó entrevistas semiestructuradas. Luego se analizaron los discursos en base al referente del Materialismo Dialéctico, de donde emerge el siguiente tema: el cuidado de las personas con trastorno mental en el cotidiano de las familias.Para las familias, el cuidado de las personas con trastorno mental en el cotidiano demanda tiempo y dedicación y, ante la falta de una red social de apoyo, significa una sobrecarga emocional y financiera más que resulta en ruptura de vínculos y renuncia a los proyectos de vida.Esse estudo foi delineado de forma qualitativa e o objetivo foi desvendar as representações das famílias sobre o cuidar cotidiano da pessoa com transtorno mental. O cenário da pesquisa constituiu-se de quatro Centros de Atenção Psicossocial, situados na cidade de São Paulo/Brasil. Foram eleitos 22 cuidadores, partícipes dos grupos terapêuticos de família desenvolvidos, sistematicamente, nessas instituições e que moravam com o usuário no mesmo domicílio. Na abordagem aos sujeitos foram respeitados os princípios éticos de participação na pesquisa mediante assinaturado Termo de Consentimento Livre e Esclarecido e aprovação do Comitê de Ética e Pesquisa da Secretaria Municipal de Saúde de São Paulo. Os achados foram coletados no período de junho a agosto de 2007, por intermédio de entrevistas, semiestruturadas, e submetidos à análise de discurso com esteio no referencial do materialismo histórico-dialético, possibilitando a emergência do seguinte tema: "O cuidar da pessoa com transtorno mental no cotidiano das famílias".
