This ethnographic case study had the objective of understanding family interactions of people who live with HIV and AIDS in their family context. The data was collected through participant observation and interviews. The cultural descriptors "denying the existence of communication problems with the family", "living the fear of rejection by the family", "denying seropositivity", "trying to hide the diagnosis", "seeking to prevent suffering", lead us to the following sub-themes: "using strategies to share the diagnosis", "living your own emotional instability and that of the family". Of these, the cultural theme emerge: "living with HIV/AIDS". A positive impact was found of the study on the collaborators through the opportunity of self-reflection on the contingencies which interfere in family communication contributing to their wellbeing.
