Attentive listening: considerations for nurses using the life history method

Resumo: Interpersonal relationships are being progressively replaced by virtual spaces. Listening to others is increasingly difficult. The nursing professional, trained by the biomedical model, besides prioritizing technology and more complex situations, tends to be a passive listener (superficially hearing the other). This article aimed at presenting a theoretical reflection on the importance of attentive listening to the life history method. Data was collected via structured and unstructured interviews in a qualitative research in nursing. Unstructured interviews are capable of obtaining subjective data that enable the researcher to delve into the subjects' reality. Its use in the life history method requires the establishment of a trusting relationship with the interviewee. The research concluded that the narrative in the life history method provides rich information for the recording of experiences in the collective dimension of social groups; it is an important tool in a professional-client relationship. Sensitive listening, effectively, is a soft technology that becomes therapeutic when applied in relationships, care, and research. As human beings researchers and health professionals should exercise listening and silence skills without passing judgement.

Escuchar a los demás es cada vez más difícil. El personal de enfermería, capacitado en el modelo biomédico, tiende a dar prioridad a la tecnología, a las situaciones más complejas y a ser oyente pasivo, es decir, escuchar superficialmente a los demás. Este artículo presenta una reflexión teórica sobre la importancia de escuchar atentamente al método historia de vida, utilizando la entrevista no estructurada como técnica de recogida de datos para la investigación cualitativa en enfermería. La entrevista no estructurada logra obtener datos subjetivos que permiten que el investigador ahonde en la realidad del sujeto investigado. Se destaca que, al emplear la entrevista no estructurada como técnica en el método historia de vida, el investigador debe establecer una relación de confianza con el sujeto entrevistado. Se concluye que la narrativa en el método historia de vida proporciona información valiosa para registrar las experiencias de la dimensión colectiva de grupos sociales y que es una herramienta importante en la relación entre el profesional y el cliente. La escucha sensible es una tecnología blanda de cuidados y se torna terapéutica en las relaciones, en la atención y en la investigación. Investigadores y profesionales del campo de la salud, como seres humanos, deben practicar algunas virtudes tales como escuchar y callar, sin juzgar.As relações interpessoais vêm sendo cada vez mais substituídas por espaços virtuais. Ouvir o outro está cada vez mais difícil. O profissional de enfermagem, formado pelo modelo biomédico, tende a priorizar a tecnologia, as situações de maior complexidade e apresentar uma escuta surda, que consiste em ouvir o outro superficialmente. Com este artigo, objetivou-se realizar uma reflexão teórica sobre a importância da escuta atenta ao método história de vida, com o uso da entrevista não estruturada como técnica de coleta de dados para pesquisa qualitativa na enfermagem. A entrevista estruturada e a não estruturada diferenciam-se, ressaltando-se a segunda como capaz de obter dados subjetivos para aprofundar a realidade do sujeito pesquisado. Destaque-se que, no uso da entrevista não estruturada como técnica no método história de vida, o pesquisador deve estabelecer uma relação de confiança com o entrevistado. Concluiu-se que o relato na história de vida fornece um rico material para a apreensão de experiências da dimensão coletiva de grupos sociais, sendo uma ferramenta importante na relação profissional-cliente. A escuta sensível, efetivamente, é uma tecnologia leve de cuidado e torna-se terapêutica nas relações, na assistência e na pesquisa.
