Resumo: This exploratory study examined the work of obstetric nurses in delivery and analyzed their understanding of their profession. Thirty-nine nurses who worked in obstetric centers of maternity wards in the city of São Paulo were interviewed. Of these, 51,2% said they did deliveries sporadically, 46,3% routinely and 7,7% said they were dissatisfied with their profession. These results make it possible to discuss better working conditions and the investment in training so that we can recover delivery as a physiological and humanized event.
