Resumo: This is a qualitative study with a phenomenological approach that was carried out at the Malnutrition Prevention Program in a Health Center in Belo Horizonte, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The objective was to understand the meaning of being a mother of a malnourished child. Eleven interviews were performed to collect data. The results showed two major categories: "Having a malnourished child: revealing existence" and "Having a malnourished child: the relationship between mother-child in the process of caring". This study provided an opportunity to see new routes for the teaching/care process of the mother-child experiencing malnutrition.

Su objeto fue comprender lo que significa para la madre tener un hijo desnutrido. Los datos se colectaron mediante 11 entrevistas y el análisis comprensivo del discurso permitió construir dos categorías: Tener un hijo desnutrido: la existencia se revela y Tener un hijo desnutrido: la relación madre-hijo en el proceso de cuidar. Con este estudio pudimos vislumbrar nuevos caminos en la enseñanza/asistencia/cuidado del binomio madre-hijo, en la vivencia de la desnutrición.Este estudo qualitativo e de abordagem fenomenológica foi desenvolvido com mães de crianças desnutridas do Programa de Prevenção e Combate à Desnutrição de um centro de saúde de Belo Horizonte - MG. Teve como objetivo compreender o que significa para a mãe ter um filho desnutrido. Os dados foram colhidos mediante 11 entrevistas e a análise compreensiva das falas possibilitou a construção de duas categorias: "Ter um filho desnutrido: a existência se revela" e "Ter um filho desnutrido: a relação mãe-filho no processo de cuidar".
