Analysis of the process of shift report at an unit of pediatric hospital

This study aims to examine the shift handover process in a hospital unit, to identify its methods, the sort of information passed over to the team, what is considered relevant to be informed, and the process positive aspects. This is a qualitative and quantitative study whose sample consisted of 28 nurses in a pediatric unit. Data was collected via questionnaire with an initial approach to identify the characteristics of the subject, followed by open questions and multiple choices questions. It was observed that the whole team uses verbal language along with writing language. The subject intercurrence is common and presents a high frequency among the subjects originated throughout the process. We noticed that many issues considered important by customers and that should be addressed by the nursing staff on shift report are not conveyed. In relation to the positive aspects of the process it was highlighted, emphatically, the nurses, technicians and auxiliaries continued care. It was also identified that several issues considered important by the nurses are not addressed during shift change. We conclude that the shift change report is an efficient method to the exchange of information among members of the team work. However there are many issues that are considered important but are not transmitted by the professionals.
