The optimism against the utopia: An ideological and semantic struggle

Resumo: | The aim of this article is to show the semantic leap between the initial meaning of the concept of utopia and the historical roots of its pejorative connotation. The author Laurent Loty explains this leap as a result of another theory: Leibniz’s optimism, his economic recovery by Bernard de Mandeville in favor of liberalism, and his psychological reinterpretation by Collin d’Harleville. A consequence of this optimism is the rejection of whatever is not the result of God’s will: if whatever that is must be, then whatever that is not must not be. Hence a categorical rejection of utopia as a defense against evil, whether it be theological or economic. Loty intends to deconstruct this theoretical creation of a common opinion opposed to utopia. Showing that what is not can be constitutes not only a philosophical task, but also a political duty for those who do not want to obey the current TINA law: “There Is No Alternative” to world neoliberalism. |

El autor Laurent Loty explica este salto como resultado de otra teoría: el optimismo de Leibniz, su recuperación económica por Bernard de Mandeville a favor del liberalismo, y su reinterpretación psicológica por Collin d’Harleville. La consecuencia de este optimismo es el rechazo de todo lo que no es fruto de la voluntad de Dios: si todo lo que es debe ser, todo lo que no es no debe ser. De ahí el rechazo categórico de la utopía como defensa contra el mal, sea teológico o económico. Loty pretende deconstruir esta creación teórica de una opinión común opuesta a la utopía. Demostrar que lo que no es puede ser constituye no solo una tarea filosófica, sino también un deber político para quienes no quieren obedecer la actual ley TINA: “There Is No Alternative” al neoliberalismo mundial.O objetivo deste artigo é mostrar o salto semântico entre o sentido inicial do conceito de utopia e as raízes históricas da sua conotação pejorativa. O autor Laurent Loty explica esse salto como resultado de uma outra teoria: o otimismo de Leibniz, a sua recuperação econômica por Bernard de Mandeville em prol do liberalismo, e a sua reinterpretação psicológica por Colin d’Harleville. A consequência desse otimismo é a rejeição de tudo o que não resulta da vontade de Deus: se tudo que é deve ser, então tudo o que não é, não deve ser. Daí a rejeição categórica da utopia como defesa contra o mal, seja teológico ou econômico. Loty pretende desconstruir essa criação teórica de uma opinião comum oposta à utopia.
