Authoritarian regimes and hybrid regimes : old phenomena, new dynamics

Resumo: Is the phenomenon of the authoritarian regimes relevant to our times, even before the acclaimed success of the so-called “third-wave of democratization”? This essay will examine how the authoritarian regimes stand in a general framework of political regimes in the world, particularly in relation to democracy and to the regimes called “hybrid”, which combine democratic and authoritarian traits. It is argued that, even as it cannot be sustained that there exists a “democratic decline”, there are traces of an authoritarian renewal, manifest even in these “shades of gray” of the hybrid species.

It is argued that, even as it cannot be sustained that there exists a “democratic decline”, there are traces of an authoritarian renewal, manifest even in these “shades of gray” of the hybrid species. ¿Sigue siendo relevante hoy en día el fenómeno de los regímenes autoritarios, incluso ante el aclamado éxito de la llamada "tercera ola de democratización"?Este ensayo examina cómo se sitúan los regímenes autoritarios en el panorama general de los regímenes del mundo, especialmente en relación con las democracias y los llamados "regímenes híbridos", regímenes que combinan rasgos democráticos y autoritarios. Sostiene que, aunque sea insostenible hablar de un "declive democrático", hay indicios de una renovación autoritaria, que se manifiesta incluso en las "capas grises" de los regímenes híbridos.O fenômeno dos regimes autoritários é ainda hoje relevante, mesmo diante do aclamado sucesso da chamada ‘’terceira onda de democratizações”? Este ensaio vai examinar como os regimes autoritários se posicionam diante de um quadro geral de regimes no mundo, especialmente em relação às democracias e aos chamados “regimes híbridos”, regimes que combinam características democráticas e autoritárias.
