The objective of this work is to analyze the concept of utopia elaborated by the hungarian sociologist Karl Mannheim. To do so, we will study the role played by Ideology and utopia in Mannheim’s thought. The book is the founding charter of the sociology of knowledge as an autonomous discipline. We will show how Ideology and utopia develops an approximation between imaginary and politics. Mannheim argues that all society is based on fictions, symbols, myths and rites. The sociologist distances himself from Marx and Engels by criticizing the distinction between alienated consciousness and enlightened consciousness, science and ideology. At the heart of the sociology of knowledge developed by Mannheim is a polarization between ideology and utopia, defined by the philosopher Paul Ricoeur as “dialectic of the imagination”. For Mannheim, the concept of ‘utopia’ would develop in opposition to the notion of ‘ideology’: the tension between one and the other would be at the base of every community.
