José Maurício and Marcos Portugal: a false polarization in a context with multiple protagonists

Resumo: | Though it may be regarded as a “given”, the supposed rivalry between Fr. José Maurício Nunes Garcia and Marcos Portugal, as habitually portrayed, is extremely reductionist and simplistic. When the Portuguese court arrived at Rio de Janeiro in 1808, José Maurício was the only musician in a position to take on the leading musical roles and to provide the range of compositions that the court needed. However, little by little, the successive arrivals of musicians from Portugal relieved him of certain tasks: not only Marcos Portugal, but, before him, Bernardo José de Souza Queiroz and Fortunato Mazziotti. Thus the question of the professional relations between the various protagonists in the first years of the Royal Family’s stay is much more complex than the traditional polarisation between José Maurício (the goodie) and Marcos Portugal (the baddie). A grasp, on the one hand, of the range of tasks and positions to be fulfilled and, on the other, of their distribution among the principal musicians available, reveals a great diversity of musical activity and various figures that stand out. |

Cuando la corte portuguesa llegó a Río de Janeiro en 1808, José Maurício era el único músico capaz de asumir los roles musicales principales y proporcionar la gama de composiciones que la corte necesitaba. Poco a poco, sin embargo, las sucesivas llegadas de músicos portugueses le relevaron de ciertas tareas: no sólo Marcos Portugal, sino también Bernardo José de Souza Queiroz y Fortunato Mazziotti antes que él. Así, la cuestión de las relaciones profesionales entre los distintos protagonistas en los primeros años de la estancia de la familia real es mucho más compleja que la tradicional polarización entre José Mauricio (el bueno) y Marcos Portugal (el malo). José Maurício Nunes Garcia e Marcos Portugal, da forma como costuma ser retratada, é extremamente reducionista e simplista. Quando a corte portuguesa chegou ao Rio de Janeiro, em 1808, José Maurício era o único músico em condições de assumir os principais papéis musicais e fornecer o leque de composições que a corte precisava. Contudo, aos poucos, as chegadas sucessivas de músicos de Portugal aliviaram-no de certas tarefas: não só Marcos Portugal, mas, antes deste, Bernardo José de Souza Queiroz e Fortunato Mazziotti. Assim, a questão das relações profissionais entre os vários protagonistas nos primeiros anos da estada da Família Real é bem mais complexa do que a tradicional polarização entre José Maurício (o bom) e Marcos Portugal (o mau).
