Suíte para os Orixás: from composition to the drumset performance of Esdra “Neném” Ferreira on tracks Xangô and Katendê

Resumo: This paper identifies performance elements characteristic of the style of drummer Esdra “Neném” Ferreira. For this purpose, we analyzed the tracks Katendê and Xangô from the CD, Suite para os Orixás, which is the result of a partnership between Neném and Mauro Rodrigues. We showed how certain rhythms and melodies, based on candomblé traditions, were presented by Neném to Mauro and then how they were adapted in the composition of the suite and in the performance of drums and percussion. Finally, by transcribing and analyzing several excerpts of the drums in the two tracks, it was possible to point out some characteristics of Neném’s style, such as the influence of the musical language of candomblé, his constant interaction with the musical material around him, his mastery over odd meters, and his ability to use syncopations, upbeats, and cross rhythms without losing the sense of the groove.

Para ello, analizamos los temas Katendê y Xangô del CD Suíte para os Orixás, fruto de la colaboración entre Neném y Mauro Rodrigues. Mostramos cómo determinados ritmos y melodías, basados en las tradiciones del Candomblé, fueron presentados por Neném a Mauro y, posteriormente, cómo fueron adaptados en la composición de la suite y en la interpretación de los tambores y la percusión. Por último, mediante la realización y el análisis de varias transcripciones de los tambores en las dos pistas, fue posible señalar algunas características del estilo de Neném, como la influencia del lenguaje musical del candomblé, su constante interacción con el material musical que le rodeaba, su dominio de los compases impares y su capacidad para utilizar la síncopa, los cambios de frases de un compás a otro y los ritmos cruzados, sin perder el sentido de la conducción rítmica.Este artigo identifica elementos de performance característicos do estilo do baterista Esdra “Neném” Ferreira. Para isto foram analisadas as faixas Katendê e Xangô do CD Suíte para os Orixás, que é resultado de uma parceria entre Neném e Mauro Rodrigues. Mostramos a maneira com que certos ritmos e melodias, baseados em tradições do candomblé, foram apresentados por Neném a Mauro e, em seguida, como eles foram adaptados na composição da suíte e na performance da bateria e percussão.
