This paper aims to analyze the scientific production related to the care of the elderly, describing the facilities and difficulties in family and identifying the determining factors. To understand the background on the family caregiver and the elderly were carried out searches of articles, monographs, dissertations, theses in the databases LILACS, SciELO, MEDLINE Google academic portal, as well as publications of the Ministry of Health family is extremely important to the health of the elderly, and yet there are several difficulties in caring at home. The lack of guidance on care of elderly cause emotional stress, burden and financial problems. Public policy and society have an important role to ease the hardships along with the family, avoiding institutionalization of the elderly. The elderly population is growing, and the entire network of health care for the elderly should be prepared to serve you better quality of life and ensuring a healthy aging. The difficulties in caring for the elderly are caused by lack of preparation, lack of information and the inexperience of care, constituting a major obstacle to the family and caregiver. Create strategies to meet for the family to improve care in home care, making the family a participant in the process of care are strategies that can counteract the difficulties with the Family Health Teams through home visits.
