Most peripartum maternal and neonatal deaths in developing countries are considered preventable. As a result, the reduction in mortality associated with childbirth is now a priority. The World Healthy Organization (WHO) developed Safe Childbirth Checklist in 2012 to reduce the occurrence of damage to childbirth care and increase the use of essential practices related to maternal healthy improvement and perinatal care. This interventionist study intends to describe the experience of implementing the Checklist in the Obstetrics service of a hospital of the Health Department of the Federal District in Brazil. There was a lot of acceptance and participation by the health team during the construction of the checklist assessment. However, some draw back was observed when trying to make the checklist part of the daily practice of care procedures. There is a need to find ways of getting the leadership more engaged in this process and offer organizational support that includes the qualification of health professionals as well as the awareness of health professionals for the correct use of the checklist, aiming at better care results.
