Resumo: The transition period in dairy cows increases oxygen supply to tissues and the production of reactive oxygen species. Along with the impairment of the antioxidant system, it generates oxidative stress, which may be linked to the development of various diseases. This study aimed to evaluate oxidative stress in 35 Gir dairy heifers during the peripartum period. Uric acid, copper, iron, zinc, albumin, total bilirubin, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) were analyzed. A linear model with Poisson distribution was applied using the GENMOD procedure. The first measurement (30d before birth) was considered as reference (T0), and samples were collected 16 days before birth (T1) and seven (T2), 14 (T3), 28 (T4) and 42 days postpartum. childbirth (T5). Copper, zinc and albumin varied within the reference range, although there was an increase in copper of 45.92% at T3. Uric acid levels increased during the transition period, with no significant difference until 16 days pre-partum, when an increase of 67.57% was observed, with its highest concentration observed in T4. SOD had a greater increase (300%) than GSH-Px (36%) at the end of the experimental period, accompanied by biochemical adaptations to ensure an effective antioxidant response. Therefore, it can be concluded that the peripartum period causes oxidative stress in Gir dairy heifers.
