Teleconsultations in pediatrics: experience in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil

The brazilian Public Health System (SUS) provides free and universal access to health care for all brazilians. The country has continental dimensions and specialists in rural areas are missing. The Telehealth Brazil Networks program currently allows the assistance to family health professionals via teleconsulting system. This article aims to present and analyze the results of the asynchronous teleconsulting carried out by the Telehealth Nucleus at Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in the pediatric area and its sub-specialties. Data were taken from teleconsulting systems. During the study period, 813 teleconsultations in pediatrics and their sub-specialties were performed, of which 380 were female patients and 433 male patients, with no statistical implications. The majority of teleconsultations occurred in patients aged 0-6 years. Waiting time for teleconsulting responses should be reduced through training and awareness of responding physicians.
