This article argues that stu­dies on the forms of inequality and poverty that affect contemporary In­digenous Peoples must start from a macro-historical and micro-sociologi­cal perspective, in order to construct a definition of “indigenous poverty” sen­sitive to its diversity and complexity. In order to do so, it will seek to reconcile the debates about dependent capita­lism and the socioeconomic processes of integration of Indigenous Peoples into specific colonial and capitalist sys­tems, paying attention to the fact that these did not unfold in the same way in each place and over time, as eviden­ced by studies on interethnic contact in anthropology and ethnohistory, which privilege indigenous perspectives and transformations on these processes. The article will be supported by eth­nographic contributions and denuncia­tions of human rights violations of Indi­genous Peoples in the Southern region of Brazil.
