Resumo: This research sought to analyze the aesthetics of cordel woodcuts focusing on the work of artist J.Borges. The objective was to understand how some narratives of northeastern popular culture are presented in cordel woodcuts, as well as to understand the context of woodcuts in cordel literature, the poetics and themes developed by popular artists, verifying the development of cordel in contemporary times. For this, a qualitative approach methodology was adopted, with a bibliographic and documentary procedure, collecting information in books, research, articles, catalogs and literary documents related to the theme and the artist mentioned. In view of this, it was verified that woodcuts are an essential part of the cordel and the social context of the region, that the themes and representations made by the artist J.Borges are shaped and constructed through the daily life, imagination and culture of a country reality. It was understood, in this context, that woodcuts are constantly changing and evolving, just like the artist, becoming an essential part of northeastern culture and aesthetics, highlighting its importance in Brazilian art.

Teve como objetivo compreender como na xilogravura de cordel se apresenta algumas narrativas da cultura popular nordestina, assim como entender o contexto da xilogravura na literatura de cordel, as poéticas e temáticas desenvolvidas pelos artistas populares, verificando o desenvolvimento do cordel na contemporaneidade. Para isso, foi adotada metodologia de abordagem qualitativa, com procedimento bibliográfico e documental, coletando informações em livros, pesquisas, artigos, catálogos e documentos literários relacionados ao tema e ao artista mencionado. Diante disso, verificou-se que a xilogravura é parte imprescindível do cordel e do contexto social da região, que as temáticas e representações feitas pelo artista J.Borges são moldadas e construídas por meio do cotidiano, imaginário e cultura de uma realidade sertaneja.
