For a better understanding of literacy and literacy, this research aimed to elucidate the theme presented by exposing its concepts, as well as the challenges in the school environment. We sought through a methodological procedure to research bibliographical sources, with reading, analysis and interpretation of articles and legislation texts, which served for the theoretical foundation, of an exploratory nature. It is noteworthy that even though they are different processes, they must be inseparable, as one complements the other. In this sense, it is essential to reflect on the concerns of knowing the differences between the processes, and how they can contribute to the improvement of education, considering the numerous challenges in the school environment. We use authors such as 1998 Soares; 2003 Blacksmith; 2007 Vygotsky; 2010 Tfouni; 2014 Santi; 2007 Santos and Mendonça; 2012 Martins and Spechela. Thus, it is concluded that the aforementioned research highlights the due importance of the theme presented, enabling the theme to be put into practice and that it can serve as a pedagogical aid for a better understanding, understanding its concepts and preparing for challenges to be faced and overcome.
