Resumo: Accidents at work kill more than drugs, alcohol and AIDS. Civil construction is the sector in which the most occupational accidents occur. Awareness is a way to be taken to keep employees' lives safe. In 2018, the state of Mato Grosso ranked 10th in the ranking of occupational accidents in the country, the numbers indicate that there is one victim every 52 minutes and one death every three and a half days. Accident cases are often caused by the lack or inadequate use of PPE's, lack of technical knowledge, lack of management and reckless attitudes. The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between the non-compliance with the determinations of the Regulatory Norms pertinent to the area of operation with the high rate of accidents in civil construction. For the preparation of this study, on-site visits were carried out in predetermined works, with different sizes and construction stages, located in the city of Barra do Garças-MT and a structured questionnaire was applied and a check list of the requirements stipulated by the relevant Regulatory Standards was applied. Based on the data, it was possible to build charts and graphs that made it possible to assess qualitatively and quantitatively the main reasons for accidents at construction sites in the municipality. In view of the results obtained in the visits, it is understood that in all the buildings visited there is a need to invest in good management, aiming to minimize the cases of accidents and provide employees with a safe work environment. However, for these measures to be taken, the responsibility of the technicians must be made aware of training employees and adopt preventive measures and demand compliance with the Regulatory Safety Standards. Considering that Civil Construction is the sector that hires the most in Brazil, and that employees in this sector are those who are at the highest risk of accidents at work. No matter how constant measures are being taken to reduce the number of accidents being taken, recklessness and lack of inspection are the main factors that place employees in a vulnerable situation.

No matter how constant measures are being taken to reduce the number of accidents being taken, recklessness and lack of inspection are the main factors that place employees in a vulnerable situation.
