A expansão e participação do modal ferroviário no transporte diário de passageiros na região metropolitana de São Paulo (1977-2017)

One of the main challenges in urban planning is the numerous processes that involve mobility and displacement of people. This process becomes more complex in large metropolises, whose population density, legalurban regulation and urban infrastructure are constraints that directly imply in the planning process. Thus, cities such as São Paulo, focus on this study, represent enormous possibilities of study and understanding of reality, to predict demands and solutions of various orders. In this sense, the objective of this work is to verify the participation of the rail modal in the passenger transport of the largest metropolis in Brazil, given the importance of this modal in the flow of people within the capital of São Paulo and the metropolitan region. Thus, data collection was carried out in the Integrated Urban Transport Plan of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (RMSP) - PITU, 2040; as well as bibliographic references and official documents. The data were tabulated, allowing the visualization of the expansion process and participation of the rail modal in passenger transport in the period from 1977 to 2017. It is possible to verify that there was an expansion in the participation of the rail modal in daily trips, representing 11% in the participation. Public transport represents almost 40% of daily trips throughout the RMSP, with a predominance of the road modal. We conclude that the rail transport modal is fundamental for the flow of people in the metropolis of São Paulo, and its expansion is fundamental to improve urban mobility.
