The increase in research on textbooks from the end of the 20th century is remarkable. Starting from new theoretical contributions proposed by the field of Cultural History, the textbook starts to be understood under new perspectives, proposing to go beyond an ideological critique. Seeking to understand the implications of Law 10639/03, which establishes the inclusion of the teaching of African History and Afro-Brazilian culture in textbooks, the objective of this work is to contribute to this field of research by carrying out a historiographical balance about the black people in the textbook, together with a proposal to analyze the image of Zumbi dos Palmares in the textbook, having as main reference the analytical model formulated by JornRusen. The specific objectives were: 1) to introduce discussions about the field of investigation in textbooks and their new evaluation criteria; 2) present the historiographical debate about Zumbi and Quilombo dos Palmares; 3) present a brief historiographical balance on the issue of black people in textbooks along with a research proposal on the image of Zumbi dos Palmares in the textbook.
