The Mato Grosso northern portion besides being inserted in one of the regions with the greatest biodiversity on the planet is characterized by its great potential in agribusiness, especially in grain production, livestock and vegetable and mineral extraction. The opportunities offered by the region result in population growth and this, combined with the need for more and more to produce for growing world population, the northern region has suffered in recent decades an understatement of native vegetation. The environmental monitoring and the creation of information database are made up of initial procedures for management and awareness of the phenomenon. With the support of geotechnology made possible the development of a case study in the city of Guarantã do Norte, Mato Grosso, in order to get the chronological knowledge of the behavior of land use and occupation. To do this, satellite images were acquired Landsat 5 and Landsat 8 the years 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2003, 2006, 2010 and 2014. Seeking to characterize the municipality, ranked surface in thematic classes of native vegetation, explored area, hydrography , fires, rocky outcrop and urban perimeter. The classification allowed the quantification of areas, noting a reduction of 32.4% of the native vegetation equivalent to 50,660.02 hectares of forest cleared, the resulting increase of the areas explored in 32.2%.
