Resumo: Introduction: There is a wide range of depressive disorders, which are characterized by sad, irritable or empty moods, along with the psychosomatic ones that alter the individual as a whole. Among the population of undergraduate students who develop depression, there are students of medicine. In general, students of medicine begin their academic trajectory without an end of adolescence. This phase of life is composed by changes, generating a series of psychic, physical and social conflicts. In this context, the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of depressive symptomatology among medical students of the Federal University of Mato Grosso Sinop Campus (hereafter UFMT Sinop). Methodology: This is an exploratory, descriptive and cross-sectional study, with a quantitative approach, carried out with students from the School of Medicine at the UFMT Sinop, regularly enrolled in the 2017/2 school year, from October to December 2017. We collected data using a sociodemographic questionnaire and Beck Depression Inventory to evaluate depressive symptomatology. The data were analyzed by means of statistical treatment, the simple percentage and the absolute values were used for data analysis. The results were presented through tables, which were produced using tabulation in Excel spreadsheets. Results and discussion: Of 199 academics regularly enrolled in the School of Medicine, 113 students participated in this study, of which 22 were from the fourth year, 32 from the third, 42 from the second and 17 from the first year. The study sample constitutes 56.78% of the total number of students enrolled, the largest number being female, 52.21%. The age range ranged from 17 to 44 years, with 62.83% belonging to the range of 21-25 years. Regarding the complaint of psychological discomfort, 48.67% reported to manifest any type of discomfort. The prevalence between the students of medicine of the UFMT Sinop presenting depressive symptomatology was 41.58%, 58% were classified without mild symptoms or symptoms, 29.20% with mild to moderate symptoms, 11.50% with moderate to severe symptoms and 0.88% classified as severe symptomatology. Conclusion: In view of the data presented, it is possible to conclude that academics need support for their mental health once they start their academic life. Also, we see a predisposing factor for academics to be vulnerable, regarding that many come from other states, and so, they are away from their families, wherever or not it is a form of foundation and support to them when they go through difficult times during undergraduation.
