Resumo: | Despite the benefits internationally recognized of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) for six months, its prevalence is still low. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and duration of exclusive breastfeeding and identify the main factors associated with early weaning. This is a cross-sectional study conducted in a public hospital in the city of Cuiabá. All women admitted to the maternity in the 24 hours postpartum participated in this study. Data were collected on interview at 24 hours postpartum and via telephone contact during the first six months of a child's life. The prevalence of EBF at the end of the sixth month of life was 7,52%. At the end of the 7 first month of life, fewer than half of children (41.85%) were in EBF and 2.96% were no longer receiving breast milk. EBF was stopped in the first month of life, especially by the introduction of water, tea and / or fruit juices, featuring the predominant breastfeeding. The associated factors were low birth weight and pacifier use. Results of this study point to the need to increase the prevalence of BF and EBF in the city, considering the benefits to the mother-infant dyad resulting from this practice. Mother of awareness for the importance of this practice by health professionals is necessary as well as ensuring protection strategies and support BF and EBF. |

Mother of awareness for the importance of this practice by health professionals is necessary as well as ensuring protection strategies and support BF and EBF.Apesar dos benefícios internacionalmente reconhecidos do aleitamento materno exclusivo (AME) até os seis meses, sua prevalência ainda é baixa.
