The large fires in Brazil, such as Gran Circus North American (1951), Building Joelma (1974), marked the beginning of the legislation against fire and panic, in which the state imposes rules, laws aiming at the safety of the building's occupants. The objective of this work was to analyze commercial buildings in the Vale do Araguaia / MT, in which the Fire and Panic Prevention Project (PPCI) is mandatory. The conformities and non-conformities of the projects and buildings were verified using an on-site checklist, following the Technical Norms of the Fire Department (NTCB) of the State of Mato Grosso. Eight buildings were visited, which were divided according to their occupations, namely: group B-1 (Hotel and similar), group C-2 (Commerce with medium and high fire load), and group E -1 (School in general). Considering the NTCB'S, of the eight buildings examined, only four had all the required preventives and adequately, one had all the required preventives, but in an inadequate way or disagreement with the specific standard and three of the buildings did not have the necessary preventives, being that one of them did not have the minimum necessary to offer security to the public. Thus, we observe that there is still negligence on the part of the owners and entrepreneurs of commercial buildings, being essential the adequacy and/or implementation of security measures, by the current legislation.
