The organized crime, especially the drug trafficking, constitute problems that nowadays afflict the majority of the countries, reaching levels never imagined before. Beyond affecting public security and citizens in general, in the last years, these criminal activities have been opposing to the existence of the own State, facing it in an audacious and violent way. Traditional methods of confrontation and investigations weren’t able to face the criminal organizations and narcotics traffickers’ power, whose profits are similar to those derived from the biggest companies of the world. In this context, intelligence activity has appeared as one more instrument to be used in organized crime and drug trafficking combating. Experiences have demonstrated its efficacy in prevention as well as in repressing crimes. In Brazil, the seriousness of the situation has come to the utmost. Frequently, news about actions perpetrated by traffickers against public agents and also against society emerge. Some places even dictate their own law and impose their wills in detriment of the population and the State. The evolution of Intelligence activity so far, in Brazil and in the world, leads to the understanding of its importance. The relevance of police intelligence also deserves to be showed up, constituting currently the principal vector of an efficient combat on drug trafficking. Drugs historical evolution and how man deals with it from centuries are essential to the understanding of the actual juncture. Politics and strategies elaboration necessarily goes through this agreement, preventing mistakes to be repeated and public resources to be wasted.
