The research has the scope to analyze Michel de Montaigne's ethical thinking, understand it, demonstrate how it is constituted and applied and, in the end, present it as current and applicable. The author of the Essays starts from a practical philosophy, calls on the authority of the classics to, in a next move, contradicts it, and exposes that, before blindly submitting to bookish and erudite knowledge, one must learn from the experience of one's own life. Thus, dialectically, he presents his way of perceiving the world and life through a process of reflection that contains three elements: self-awareness, self-experience, and free judgment. They constitute an intellectual architecture that allows Montaigne to present ethics capable of promoting independence to the subject. For this, the chapters “From Repentance”, “From sparing the will” and “From experience” will be analyzed to present the compositional elements of Montaignian ethics.
