Resumo: Farmers in the mountainous environment of Nova Friburgo state of Rio de Janeiro have been adapting soil cover plants empirically to the crop rotations. In this regard, with the purpose to establish the knowledge about the relationship between different planting and cutting seasons, with the contribution of phytomass and N and C of black oats (Avena strigosa Schreb.) and white lupine (Lupinus albus L.), was an experiment carried out from March 2015 to February 2016 at an organic production unit in Nova Friburgo. The adopted design was in randomized blocks, with three replications, in a split-plot scheme. In the plots three planting seasons were evaluated: March, July, and October; in the subplots the two cover plants (black oats and white lupine), and the subplots the four collection times of the cover plants: at 30, 60, 90, and 120 days after planting. It was concluded that the two species of cover plants tested showed good potential for insertion in the rotation systems of vegetables in Nova Friburgo, with regular development of white lupine at different planting times and restrictions to planting black oats in longer periods hot and rainy. Nesse sentido, objetivou-se estabelecer conhecimentos acerca da relação de diferentes épocas de plantio e de corte das plantas, com o aporte de fitomassa e de nitrogênio (N) e carbono (C) de aveia preta (Avena strigosa Schreb.) e tremoço branco (Lupinus albus L.). Para tanto, foi conduzido um experimento de março de 2015 a fevereiro de 2016, em uma unidade de produção orgânica em Nova Friburgo, estado do Rio de Janeiro. O delineamento adotado foi em blocos ao acaso, com três repetições, em esquema de parcelas sub-subdivididas. Nas parcelas foram avaliadas três épocas de plantio: março, julho e outubro; nas subparcelas as duas plantas de cobertura (aveia preta e tremoço branco), e nas sub-subparcelas as quatro épocas de coleta das plantas de cobertura: aos 30, 60, 90 e 120 dias após o plantio. Concluiu-se que as duas espécies de plantas de cobertura testadas apresentaram bom potencial para inserção nos sistemas de rotação de cultivo de hortaliças de Nova Friburgo, com desenvolvimento regular do tremoço branco nas diferentes épocas de plantio e restrições para plantio da aveia preta em períodos mais quentes e chuvosos.
