Resumo: This article presents a excerpt from a research which objective was to analyze the meanings of school for the indigenous society Sateré Mawé. Ethnographic in character, the research sought to undertake a “thick description” of the social and symbolic relations observed at the Wahuiru Pakup Indigenous Municipal School (Novo Sol), located in the Andirá-Marau Indigenous Land, Monte Salém Community, Maués/Amazonas. Participant observation in the daily lives of families - from flour to playing in the river with children -, and active listening carried out with the research interlocutors - the teacher, students and their parents – enabled the understanding of the meanings of school for the community.

De carácter etnográfico, la investigación buscó realizar una “descripción densa” de las relaciones sociales y simbólicas observadas en la Escuela Municipal Indígena Wahuiru Pakup (Novo Sol), ubicada en el Territorio Indígena Andirá-Marau, Comunidad Monte Salém, Maués/Amazonas. La observación participante en el día a día de las familias - desde la harinada hasta el juego en el río con los niños - y la escucha activa que se llevó a cabo con los interlocutores de la investigación - el docente, los alumnos y sus padres – hicieron posible comprender los significados de la escuela para la comunidad.  Este artigo apresenta um recorte de uma pesquisa cujo objetivo foi analisar os sentidos da escola para os Sateré Mawé. De caráter etnográfico, a pesquisa procurou empreender uma “descrição densa” das relações sociais e simbólicas observadas na Escola Municipal Indígena Wahuiru Pakup (Novo Sol), localizada na Terra Indígena Andirá-Marau, Comunidade Monte Salém, Maués/Amazonas. A observação participante no dia a dia das famílias – da farinhada às brincadeiras no rio com as crianças –, e a escuta ativa realizada com os interlocutores da pesquisa – o professor, os alunos e seus pais – possibilitou a compreensão dos sentidos da escola para a comunidade.
